OK, I admit that this has nothing to do with the end of the year, or the end of the decade, it is more of a timeless list, here are automotive smells ranked.
Good Smells:
1. 60s British Car-I looked at a 66 Jaguar S Type a few weeks ago, the car was a rusty piece of shit, but the aroma of the interior was beyond intoxicating, aged leather, wood, whatever they stuff seats with, etc., intoxicating
2. 70s German car-not as nice as 60s British car,but still very good. Took me a while to realize why totally restored cars from this era just didn’t seem “right”.
3. Diesel-late 60s, last days of private passenger service, St. Louis Central station, intoxicating.
4. Gasoline-don’t like it, turn in your Jalop card.
Neutral Smells
5. Motor Oil
6. Anti-Freeze (cold)
Bad Smells
7. Anti-freeze (hot)-smells bad and also something is leaking, not good news
8. Gear Oil-Just nasty, sulphur smell, won’t go away
9. Stale Food in Interior-you meant to take the to go box out, you forgot..
10. Stale Farts-Interior-we went on a trip once, had a great, upscale Mexican dinner. The next day I had issues. We left the car and waved the doors and left the windows open, it didn’t matter, came back 45 minutes later, it was still there...

It’s a cruel joke that the worst smelling car fluid(gear oil) is the one you are guaranteed to spill everywhere every single time.

I Recently figured out this was the reason my 85 Jaguar didn’t smell that great. New one is in, smells like nothing now.

Burning power steering fluid is beyond nasty. So is burning brake fluid.

I’m neutral towards the smell of g aso l ine. I wouldn’t call its aroma pleasant , but context helps. Smelling it while I’m at the fueling station gives me a feeling of satisfaction, knowing that I won’t have to stop again for the next 300 miles or so. But detecting a leak by smelling it in my driveway would definitely put me in a sour mood.
Coolant smells sweet to me, but again, it’s not something I want to smell leaking.
Gear oil I’ve always felt meh about. Not a particularly pleasant smell, but to me it seems like a more concentrated version of an oil smell, which I’m definitely neutral towards. Maybe I’m desensitized towards oil, being much more forgiving towards a little oil leak than I would be about coolant or fuel leaks.

Fresh gas is good. Stale gas (such as after you spill it all over yourself) smells bad. Also gas that is old enough that it’s turned into varnish is an awful, awful smell.
Old well-used gear oil is probably the worst. Fresh stuff is gross but not awful. Synthetic gear oil isn’t too bad.
When I was in college, the dining hall brunch on the weekends usually included some pretty lousy hashbrown patties that had pretty much no flavor except for the oil they were fried in. They also had “syrup” which was 0% maple and I think just the medium-darkness Karo (corn syrup). We discovered that if you dipped the hashbrowns in the “syrup” it tasted like antifreeze (before they started putting bitter stuff in it).

You’re pretty spot-on with that 60 Brit smell, but really any leather heavy old car comes pretty close.

As if that results in any less smell. That’s smell out of both ends.
Don’t get me wrong, I love Indian food, but it definitely has some bad lingering odors.
